Some specialized outreach programs include:
-
Breast Cancer - One of the areas that the clinic has focused on is the access to early edetection and screening for breast cancer. With the support of the McHenry County Breast Cancer Task Force, the Clinic developed a county wide program so that four health care systems would rotate responsibility for low cost mammograms. This level of cooperation between the area’s health care systems is unprecedented, and has contributed significantly towards increasing the availability (both geographically and timewise) for this important screening.
-
Celebremos La Vida - This program replicates a highly successful breast and cervical cancer screening program based in Washington, D.C. Celebremos La Vida brings the Clinic and Centegra Health System together in a program targeting uninsured Latino women who would otherwise go without these critically needed cancer screening services. Once a month, the Clinic staff locates at the Women's Health Department at Memorial Hospital in Woodstock. Clinic staff conduct physicals, clinical breast exams and pap smears while the Centegra staff do the mammograms, all in an atmosphere of fun and festivities.
-
Mental Health - In June 2001, the Clinic began the Latino Family Therapy Program utilizing a paid bilingual/bicultural therapist to serve Latino children and adolescents. Unique in the county and in the area, this program will again move the Clinic towards a more integrated health care delivery. The Clinic also started its Brief Therapy Program for English speaking adults and children in August 2001 utilizing a long term volunteer therapist. By ensuring access to mental health services and coordinating care with the primary health care provider, patient outcomes will improve.
-
Latino Community Access - The Clinic serves as a touchpoint for the Latino community. Since its inception, the Clinic has heavily recruited bilingual staff with the understanding that with increased language access, the more likely it is to reach previously unreachable populations.
-
Domestic Violence - The Clinic has been working closely with Turning Point, the domestic violence agency in the county. A number of studies have described the high prevalence of domestic violence among women seeking care for medical rather than trauma-realted problems. Pain is one of the most common presenting symptoms. The integration of screening for domestic violence in the primary care office has begun to take hold. The Clinic and Turning Point have trained Clinic staff in domestic violence screening, and an entire section was added to the Clinic’s health history.
